Driver’s ed has changed quite a bit over the years, and because decade’s worth of statistics and crash test results are now available, basic rules have been updated to create a safer driving environment. The material being presented to current drivers is very different from the material that was being presented ten years ago, and the following are just some of the reasons why:

The Introduction of Technology in Modern Cars

Advanced safety technology was not available in cars ten years ago, but today, drivers can take advantage of tire pressure monitoring systems, rearview cameras, automatic braking and blind-spot warning systems. These come standard on a lot of the newer vehicles and help drivers avoid accidents but should not be viewed as a replacement for your eyes, and it is a must that drivers continue to pay attention to the road. While the material may be different, driver’s ed courses will still teach the importance of observing your surroundings, and even though advanced systems will provide drivers with a better sense of security, they have to be able to focus their attention.

More Distractions

Smartphones and navigation systems can be a distraction, and these gadgets can cause you to get into an accident. While a navigation system can be very helpful, it’s important not to lose focus because your eyes must continue to observe the road and not a screen. Today’s driver’s education classes will teach students how to use their navigation systems safely so that they don’t end up in an accident.

Change of Hand Placement on the Steering Wheel

The 10:00 and 2:00 position was standard practice for a very long time, but research has shown that 9:00 and 3:00 are actually better because this hand position is a lot more comfortable and safe in the event that the airbag deploys. This new positioning is what modern driver’s ed classes will teach.

Driver’s Ed Courses Can Now be Found Online

Ten years ago, you would have had to attend your classes in person, but you can now choose to take the courses online. This would allow you to access all of the right information, and you would be able to get your license even if you learn online. These courses will teach defensive driving tactics, traffic laws and a number of other important information, including how to share the road with others and how to remain aware of your surroundings.

If you’re ready to learn how to drive, Central Driving School can help you prepare. We will make sure you feel comfortable behind the wheel, and our courses will help you become a confident driver.
