Driving requires your full, undivided attention and any sort of distraction, no matter how minor, can be dangerous. Many of us have pets and love to have them with us when driving and while that is fine, there are certain rules that need to be taken into account to ensure everyone’s safety.
A great way to start is by making sure your pet is comfortable with your car and familiar with the space. This means taking them into the car and having them sit with you while the car is parked. This way, they can get a feel of the car so it’s not a total shock when you go for a drive. Getting them used to the inside of your vehicle will make them feel more comfortable and calm which will make you, the driver, feel more comfortable and calm too.
Taking your pet for a slow drive around your neighbourhood is another great way of introducing them to your car and the feeling of movement. Don’t take them on a busy road or highway the very first time just in case things don’t go well. Being close to home means you can stop the car and let your pet loose so that they are not scared or scarred from the experience. You can repeat this slow process for as many days as it takes for your pet to get used to the motion and space in your car.
The temperature will also make a big difference, so make sure your car is comfortable. Think of how much you love AC when it’s hot outside and remember that your pet feels the same way. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them. Never leave your dog or any other pet in the vehicle, even for a few minutes. Leaving pets in cars is very dangerous no matter what the weather is outside, so if your dog can’t go with you to wherever it is that you’re going, then it’s best to leave them at home or make other arrangements.
It is very dangerous to have your pet sit on your lap while you are driving and the reality is that you’re putting everyone at risk. Pets can have an unexpected reaction at any moment, which can be a very big distraction and cause an accident. This would be a nightmare and can easily be avoided by securing your pet safely in your car.
